Fast-forward a couple months later. It’s December and the leaves have all fallen. It’s much colder outside and Christmas is approaching. Sadie was still staying at the Jonas’s home. Sam was still in the hospital, and while her parents took turns coming home, they agreed it was better for her to just stay where she was. Sadie liked it this way. She wasn’t going back and forth but she still saw her mom and dad when they came home for a few days at a time. For the past month, Sadie and Mitchel had been going strong. When he couldn’t be in town, they talked every day on the phone. But every chance he got, which wasn’t often, Mitchel flew in to Chicago to visit Sadie. It took Joe a while to warm up to Mitchel, but he came around.

One day, Joe took Sadie out for Christmas shopping. Big Rob followed behind them incase they got mobbed by fans. Sadie was looking through some things for Nick’s guitar.

“So Sades, you and Mitchel? Still going?” Joe asked as Sadie looked around. She groaned a little out of annoyance.

“Joe, I thought you were over this!”

“I am, I was just wondering.” He looked at her then back at the shelf. “Have you told him about Justin or Taylor? Or any past relationships?”

Sadie scoffed a little. “And tell him how I was caught in drama and I went crazy? No I haven’t.”

“Sades, you didn’t go crazy!”

“Say what you want to make me feel better, Joe, but yeah, I kind of did.”

“Well has he told you about his past… relationships?”

Sadie looked at him. “No, why would he?”

Joe shrugged. “Just wondering.”

“Joe, there’s a reason you were wondering. What is it?”

Joe sighed. “Well, I just know that before you, he had a girlfriend, Gia. And they were together for a really long time. He never mentioned her?” Sadie shook her head. She didn’t want to think of any ex-girlfriend of Mitchel’s. The little she knew, the better, she thought. “I mean do you know how it ended with them or anything?” Joe continued. “That doesn’t interest you?” Sadie avoided eye contact.

“No, Joseph. It does not interest me.” She clenched her jaw. “I don’t care.” Sadie found something for Nick and Kevin and bought them. They walked back to the car together silently, again with Big Rob following.

“You know,” Joe started again. “If it were me, I would want to know how it ended. You know, just so I know there’s nothing they left behind.”

“Joe! Cut it out! I know, okay? I know he’s still with Gia! Just stop it!”

“You, you know? Since when?”

“Since the day Mitchel asked me to be his girlfriend. After I talked to you that night in my room you went downstairs and I heard you and everybody else talking.”

“How did you hear us? You were in your room! Weren’t you?”

Sadie shook her head. “I’m much quieter at sneaking behind corners than you are at whispering. Honestly, Joe, you’re about as discrete as an elephant. You’re loud and I can always hear you coming.” Sadie laughed and Joe smiled.

“So, you know he still has another girlfriend, but you haven’t said anything? Sades, I don’t want to try and over-protect or anything but this will lead you down a bad road. It won’t end well and it’s not healthy.”

Sadie nodded and looked at her hands resting in her lap. “I know. He’s taking me out tonight. I was thinking about bringing it up. But I don’t know.”

“Why wouldn’t you Sades?”

“Joe, Mitchel has been so nice to me. What we have is just right. I don’t want to mess anything up. I mean, I rocked the boat with Justin and Taylor and look where it got me.” She looked up at Joe. “I might need my big brother to comfort me later tonight incase things don’t go well. Will you be around?”

Joe parked the car at a Starbucks and looked at her. He smiled sweetly. “Of course I’ll be around. But I wouldn’t worry, Sades. I’m sure you and Mitchel will be just fine.”

Sadie grinned. “Look who’s finally coming around!”

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t get used to it.” He laughed.

“I know. But it means a lot to me Joe. Thank you.”

Time seemed to fly by again. Sam was finally out of the hospital, and Sadie’s parents were back home. Sadie was going back and forth between her parents’ house and the Jonas’s. She liked it. Since they live just five minutes away from each other it was easy. Valentine’s day was approaching and Sadie hadn’t talked to Mitchel about Gia yet. Most days she didn’t even think about it. Her and Mitchel were still dating and Sadie had never been happier. It was Thursday and Valentine’s Day was coming up on Monday.

Sadie sat at the kitchen table doing her Pre-Calculus homework. Joe sat down at the chair next to her and looked at her silently. She put down her pen and looked up at him.

“Hey Joe.” She said. Joe didn’t say anything. He gently placed her cell phone on her notebook covering the problem she was working on. Sadie sighed and looked at him. She shook her head. “Not today, Joe. I’m not calling him today.”

“Sadie, you said that last week like ten times. You’ve got to do it sometime. Valentine’s Day is on Monday. Not to be mean baby sister but I’d rather you not have a boyfriend than have to share him.”

“I know. I just don’t want to mess up something that is so good.”

“Sades,-“

“I know, Joe.” Sadie took her phone and called Mitchel right there. He picked up on the third ring.

“Well hey there Sadie Jonas!” She heard his voice from the other line and her heart melted.

“Hey Mitch. How are you?”

“I’m great now that I’m talking to you.” He chuckled. “I’m on set right now. What’s up?”

“Listen I won’t keep you long I just had to tell you something.” Sadie took a deep breath. “Mitch, I know about Gia. I have since the first day we started dating.”

“Sades it’s not what you think. I was-“

“Mitchel, it’s okay. It’s exactly what I think. I’ve known everything and I still have really liked you all this time. And even though you’re balancing both of us, I know you liked me at least a little.”

“I do Sadie and it’s not that-“

“Mitchel just listen to me. I’ve been hurt before, pretty badly actually. And sometimes it was my own fault, but this time I can prevent it.”

“Sadie I don’t want to hurt you, I promise! Please just-.”

“You have to decide. I’m sorry, but I can’t keep dating you if you don’t. Valentine’s Day is Monday, Mitchel. Think about it and let me know who you choose. It’s okay if you choose her. But just don’t lie, okay? Have fun on set. Bye Mitchel.”

“No, just wait. I wanted to-“ Mitchel tried to explain but Sadie hung up and her hands were shaking. She sighed and looked at Joe.

“Now what do I do?” she asked. Joe just shrugged.

“Now you wait, and you hope that he realizes how amazing you are.” Joe smiled and gave her a loving hug. “I’m proud of you. You did the right thing.”

The next four days went by slowly and painfully for Sadie. Joe helped her keep her mind off of everything. He was the only one Sadie really talked to about this. Finally, Monday came. Sadie kept her phone in her pocket at school all day to see if Mitchel would call. She was anxious all day and jumped anytime one of her friends texted her. All day there was nothing. Sadie went home after school feeling heartbroken. She walked into the kitchen and sat at the counter next to Kevin.

“Why so sad baby sister?” Kevin asked. “It’s Valentine’s Day!”

Sadie faintly smiled at him. “I’m fine, Kevin.”

“Oh before I forget, Sades.” Nick said. “This came for you.”

Sadie turned around to face Nick, who was holding a dozen red roses. Sadie grinned and took them from him.

“Who is it from?” Kevin asked.

“I don’t know,” Nick said.

“Read the card, Sades.” Joe told her. Sadie grinned as she read the tiny pink card attached to the flowers.

“Roses are red. Violets are blue. I must be crazy, If I didn’t pick you.”

Joe smiled and nodded and Sadie while Nick and Kevin both looked at her with confused stares.

“Who’s it from?” Kevin asked. Sadie just shook her head and smiled.

“My Valentine.”

“Sadie, no phones at the breakfast table sweetie,” Denise said as she placed an omelet on Sadie’s plate.

“Sorry, I’ll put it down in one second.” Sadie replied as she finished her text. She had been texting Mitchel all morning. He had to go do sound check and interviews for a concert he had later in the city. They had really connected the night before and didn’t stop talking since then. From the moment she woke up, they had been in constant connection.

“That’s it,” Denise said. Sadie blinked and her phone was gone. “I told you. No phones at the table.”

“But I was almost done I swear!” Sadie stood up to get to her phone, but Denise blocked her path.

“You can talk to him later. But it’s time to eat. Now sit down!” Denise said, smiling. Sadie reluctantly sat down. She looked up and saw Joe smirking.

“What’s your problem?” She asked. Joe looked at Frankie as they both started to sing at the same time, “Sadie’s got a boyfriend. Sadie’s got a boyfriend!” Sadie glared at them. “He is NOT my boyfriend!”

“Alright everyone, just relax. Boys, leave your sister alone!”

They all sat down and had breakfast together, but Sadie couldn’t concentrate. She just wanted to get her phone back to she could talk to Mitchel. After breakfast, Nick cleared the plates. Sadie and Joe did the dishes.

“I’m not teasing this time,” Joe said as he put the silverware away. “Are you and Mitchel officially dating?”

Sadie sighed and slowly scrubbed the pan covered in bacon grease. “No. We’re just talking a lot. He’s really sweet, but I don’t know where this will go.”

“Where do you want it to go?” Joe asked. He closed the drawer and looked at Sadie. She kept scrubbing.

“I want this to be different than Taylor and Justin. No drama or anything. I just want to be happy and have fun with Mitchel. So far he seems great.”

Joe nodded and put away the rest of the clean dishes when Sadie finished washing. When they were done, Sadie sat on the couch with her phone and texted away.

To: Mitchel; From: Sadie
Sorry. Just had to have a family breakfast and do dishes. How’s sound check?

To: Sadie; From: Mitchel
It’s fun! You should come sometime. Why don’t you come to the show tonight?

To: Mitchel; From: Sadie
Really? I’d love to!

To: Sadie; From: Mitchel
Definitely. I’ll come by and pick you up after sound check. We can hang out until the show.

To: Mitchel; From: Sadie
Cool. See you then.

Sadie closed her phone and squealed; not realizing the whole family was right behind her. Joe raised his eyebrow.

“She finally cracked.” He said. Sadie whipped her head around.

“Leave me alone!” She said, but with a huge smiles across her face. Sadie skipped upstairs to find the perfect outfit for Mitchel today. “It’s not a date, it is NOT a date.” She kept telling herself that as she dressed herself in skinny jeans; a flowy tank top, and knee-high boots with a small heel. She looked in the mirror one last time before going downstairs.

“And where might you be going?” Denise asked as Sadie glided into the kitchen.

“Mitchel’s coming over and I’m going to his show tonight. Is that okay? I won’t be back late I promise!”

“Alright, just remember your curfew miss! No later than eleven, call if there’s traffic.”

“I will!” Sadie said, grinning. Suddenly the doorbell rang, and Nick went to answer it.

“Have fun on your date!” Joe teased.

“Joe! It’s not a date!” Sadie protested. She went to the door and saw Mitchel there in the foyer; smiling his perfect smile at her. She kindly smiled back. They walked outside, and he opened the passenger door for her. As they drove into the city, they lightly talked the whole time. It was as if they never ran out of anything to say. He pulled into a parking lot.

“I heard this place was really good and I wanted to treat you to lunch.” Mitchel said as he turned off the car. “I hope you don’t mind.”

“Not at all,” Sadie said. They walked in together and sat down to lunch. When they were finished, Mitchel took her to the arena he was playing at and showed her around backstage. The last room was one that looked like the rehearsal rooms on the Jonas Brothers tour. It had a couch and two chairs and was empty. They sat down next to each other on the couch.

“I probably should have asked this before, but better late than never.” Mitchel took a deep breath. “Are you, um, seeing anybody? Any boyfriends or crushes?” His voice trailed off. He was obviously embarrassed and nervous. Sadie smiled and shook her head.

“No. No boyfriends.” She said. Mitchel’s face lit up. “But I do have a crush.” He sighed.

“Oh?”

“Yeah. He’s really cute. He has short and dark hair.” She ran her fingers through his hair. He chuckled, realizing what she meant.

“Oh yeah? What else?”

“Well, he has some tattoos and earrings. He has a wonderful singing voice. And he has gorgeous dark hazel eyes with a smile to die for.” Sadie lightly brushed her fingers on his cheek.

“He sounds like a really attractive guy.” Mitchel said, smiling. Sadie nodded.

“He is. He’s super sweet and funny too. I like the way I feel when I’m around him. I feel like I can be-“

Sadie didn’t finish her sentence. She couldn’t. Mitchel had pulled her close to him and kissed her. When they pulled away, she bit her lip and smiled.

“Like I can be myself and honestly happy.” She finished. He smiled and kissed her again right when somebody burst through the door.

“Musso! Showtime!”

Mitchel jumped up and took Sadie’s hand. He led her to a spot right on the side of the stage. She could see everything perfectly. The lights went down and the music began to play. Sadie heard the crowd of girls screaming as Mitchel ran on the stage. The whole show was full of energy. Half way through the concert, Mitchel stopped and talked to the crowd.

“Okay guys, this next song is for someone very special.” He looked to the side where Sadie was and winked. Then looked back at the crowd. “Do you guys mind if I bring her out?” The fans screamed and Sadie froze. He jogged to her and took her hand as she shook her head furiously. “It’s okay, come on.” He smiled and pulled her onstage with him. “Everybody, this is my friend Sadie. And this song is for her.” He smiled as the band started to play Shout It. He had her dance and jump around with him. At the end of the song he kissed her cheek and helped her off the stage. Sadie was blushing and smiling for the rest of the night. At the end of the show, Mitchel ran off the stage and went straight towards Sadie and hugged her. She laughed.

“Do did you like the show?” he said.

“Yeah, and that girl you brought onstage seemed pretty cool.” Sadie said, smiling. They started walking backstage to his car. It was late and if Sadie missed her curfew, she’d be dead.

“She was,” Mitchel said. “I really like her too. I got her number so I think she wants me to call her.”

“Believe me, Mitchel.” Sadie looked at him. “She does.”

Mitchel smiled and drove her home. He walked her to the door to say goodnight. It was 10:15. Perfect timing.

“So that girl I was talking about earlier.” Mitchel started. He looked at his feet.

“Go on.” Sadie encouraged, smiling.

“Do you think if I asked her to be my girlfriend, she’d say yes?”

“I don’t know. I think you should call her later and ask. You never know.”

Mitchel smiled at her. “Okay I will. But I first I wanted to do something.”

“And what might that be?”

Mitchel leaned in and gently kissed Sadie. “I wanted to kiss her.” Sadie blushed. “Goodnight, Sadie.” Mitchel said as he turned to leave. Sadie went inside and dreamily went upstairs to her room. Ten minutes later, her phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Sadie. It’s Mitchel. Look, I wanted to ask you something.”

“I’m listening.”

“I had a really nice time tonight and I really like you. Would you want to be my girlfriend?”

“I would love to be your girlfriend.” Sadie laughed. “Thanks for asking.”

Mitchel chuckled. “Of course. I’ll talk to you tomorrow then?”

“Absolutely. Goodnight Mitchel.” Sadie hung up and flung herself onto her bed, smiling. Joe knocked on the door and came in.

“Hey sister.” He smiled. “Mind if I come in?”

“Nope,” she said. Sadie sat up in her bed and smiled at him. Joe handed her a mug of hot chocolate and sat down on the bed next to her with his own cup. She leaned her head on his shoulder and took a sip.

“So, you and Mitchel. Are you guys official yet?”

“Yeah, he just asked me to be his girlfriend.” Sadie smiled. “Joe, tonight was so much fun! He took me to lunch and then I watched his show. He even took me on stage with him and sang to me. He’s so nice, Joe. I like him so much!”

Joe just nodded.

“Joe? You okay?”

He sighed. “Sades, I’m really sorry but I don’t think I want you to see Mitchel.”

Sadie lifted her head. “What? Why not?”

“Sades don’t get mad just yet alright? Hear me out.”

“Alright, fine, Joe. I’m listening! Tell me why I can’t date a guy with no drama that is actually nice to me!” Sadie raised her eyebrows and stared at Joe, waiting for his explanation.

“You went through a lot with Taylor and Justin. Sades, call me biased but they hurt you!”

“Okay, you’re biased!”

“No, Sadie. Listen!”

“I’m listening, Joe! I just don’t understand. You can’t tell me who I can and can’t date.”

Joe sat up straight and looked at her. “I know and I’m not trying to.”

“Yes you are.”

“Alright Sadie listen. Twice in one summer you got hurt badly by two different boys. When I first met you I don’t know why but something came over me. I’ve known you less than a year, yet I feel like it’s my job to protect you. You’re my little sister and it makes me sad when you’re so hurt. That day Nick found you at the train station, I was actually sick to my stomach, afraid I would never see you again.”

Sadie choked back on some tears. “Joe…”

“And then when I was hugging you and you fainted, I felt bad because I thought it was al my fault. Every time you had anxiety or were upset, I hated myself because I always thought there was something I could have done to prevent it. And I just can’t watch you go through that again.” He shook his head and looked away. Sadie wasn’t sure how to respond.

“I didn’t know you felt that way.”

“Yeah, well, now you do.” Joe said without looking up.

Sadie sighed and leaned her back against her headboard again. Joe did the same. They both looked at each other.

“Joe, you can’t protect me from every little thing. And nothing that happened this summer was your fault. It never is.”

“I know Sades, but I’m your older brother. I feel like I’m supposed to keep you safe.”

“You do, Joe. But you can’t always shelter me. But what you can do is always be there when my heart does get broken.”

Joe nodded his head. “I will, Sades. I will always be here.”

Sadie leaned her head on Joe and put her arms around his torso. “I love you Joe. You’ll always be my big brother.”

Joe smiled. “Good.” He turned a grabbed his cup of hot chocolate and stood up off of the bed. “I’m going downstairs. Night baby sister.” He smiled and walked downstairs where Nick, Kevin, Demi, and Selena were waiting. Miley was there again that night as well.

“So, how did it go?” Nick asked.

Joe shook his head. “Not so well.”

“She’s going to keep seeing him?” Demi asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I did the best I could!” Joe said.

“Well what exactly did you say?” Kevin asked.

“I told her how protective I was of her and about how much I hated that she got her heart broken a lot this summer, which is all true. But then she went on about how I can’t always protect her and how she’s finally happy with a guy.”

“So you didn’t tell her?” Selena asked.

“I couldn’t. She was just so excited.”

Nick sighed. “Joe, I know you love her, we all do, but she was right. You can’t always protect her and right now you’re trying to protect her from the truth. She has a right to know.”

Miley nodded. “Honestly, Joe. Mitchel’s one of my best friends and he’s a great guy but, he’s a flirt and a heartbreaker. I love the guy but after what you told me, he’s not the best choice for Sadie to date.”

“So what do we do now? Someone has to tell Sadie.” Nick said.

“Yeah but she won’t listen! She’s too stubborn.” Joe shook his head. “I’m not going back up there.”

“I’m going to hang out with Mitchel later tonight,” Miley said. “I’ll try and talk to him.”

“Thanks Miles.” Nick said.

Later that night, Miley met up with Mitchel at a small café.

“Miley, I met a girl the other day.” Mitchel said. She nodded.

“I know you did. It’s Sadie Jonas.”

“You look angry. Miles you alright?”

Miley sighed and shook her head. “Look Mitchel I’m not going to try and stop you from seeing her, but if you ever make her cry, I hope you realize that Joe will have no problem punching you in the face.”

“That’s why I wanted to talk to you. Miles you’re one of my best friends.” Mitchel took a deep breath. “Sadie’s not like any of the other girls I’ve dated or even met. I don’t want to just flirt with her. I want to spend all of my time with her. I really care about her!”

“That’s great Mitchel! I’m really happy for you. But are you sure you should have already asked her to be your girlfriend?”

Mitchel sighed. “Okay, yeah that was a mistake. I should go call Sadie, huh?”

Miley shrugged. “You don’t have to do that. But before you see her, or even talk to her again, you have to break up with Gia first. You can’t have two girlfriends. It isn’t fair, especially to Sadie. Listen, it’s late and I have to go. Call me when you do it okay?” Miley smiled slightly as she stood up and left the café. Mitchel smiled at the waitress.

“Check please?”

A couple of weeks had gone by. Sadie spent as much time as she could at the new house, but no more than a couple days on the weekend. This should have made things easier, but it only made things a little more frustrating for Sadie. For some reason it felt like nothing could go her way.

Sadie’s older brother, Sam, was in college. He was a sophomore at NYU. Sadie and Sam had always been really close, and it was a little hard on Sadie when he went to college.

It was a normal Wednesday afternoon. Sadie sat in history with Audrey listening to their teacher talk about the Civil War for the billionth time when the school’s guidance counselor, Ms. Davis, walked in. Sadie loved Ms. Davis. She didn’t have to go to see her often, but Ms. Davis was still nice and talkative to everyone. She was young and fun and very easy to talk to.

“I need to see Sadie please.” She said kindly. The teacher nodded and Sadie stood up. “Sadie, you can pack up your things and bring them.”

“I’m not coming back?” Sadie asked. The counselor shook her head. Sadie put her books into her bag and left the room. She followed Ms. Davis to her office where she saw Joe sitting. He looked up at her with concerned eyes.

“Joe? Why are you here? What’s going on? Is everything okay?” Sadie started to panic. Joe saw that and immediately stood up. He put his hands on her shoulders and tried sat her down on one of the chairs.

“Sades, relax, everything is fine.” He said.

“Then why are you here?” she asked. Joe held onto Sadie’s hands.

“Sades, we got a call from your mom. She and your dad are going to New York for Sam.”

“Sam? Why?” Sadie’s hands started to shake. Joe looked at Sadie, clearly upset. He couldn’t say it. He looked to Ms. Davis for help.

“Sadie,” she started. “Sam is sick. He’s in the hospital. Your parents thought it was best if they go be with him until he gets better.”

Sadie couldn’t speak. She couldn’t breathe. She wasn’t sure of what to say.

“But…. He will get better. Right?” she looked at Joe.

“He will, Sades. But it’s pretty serious. We don’t know when, but he’ll be okay.”

“Sadie,” Ms. Davis started. “Your parents want you to live with the Jonas’s until they get back. You’re leaving school early today to pack and move in.”

“Mom and Dad said you could take a few mental health days,” Joe continued. “You can stay home the rest of the week if you want to.”

Sadie just looked at her hands in her lap. She closed her eyes and nodded her head. She couldn’t think of anything to say. Her whole world was suddenly crashing down and she didn’t know what to do.

Joe took her home and she didn’t say a word. He waited downstairs as she packed almost more than half of her things from her room. She took everything downstairs and Joe helped her put everything in the car. Sadie went back inside to grab house keys and looked around once more before locking up the front door and getting into the car.

She didn’t say a word when Joe drove her to the new house, or when he helped her take everything to her room. He offered to help her unpack but she just shook her head.

“I’m here if you need me. Just call.” He said before leaving her alone in her room to unpack. She took her time and finished after an hour. Kevin came upstairs right as she slid her empty bags under the bed. He poked his head in and smiled.

“There you are.” He said.

“Where else would I be?” Sadie responded without looking up. Kevin sighed and sat on the floor, leaning his back against her bed.

“Sam is going to be okay Sadie.” He said.

Sadie shook her head. “You don’t know that.”

“Yes I do! He’ll be fine. I know it’s scary right now, but he will get better.”

“No, Kevin. You don’t know!” Sadie turned and looked at him. “You don’t know how scared I am to lose him. I don’t know what the hell is going on so how can I think that everything will be fine?”

Kevin looked at her and patted the floor next to him. She gave up. She sat next to him and hugged in her knees. Kevin wrapped his arms around her as she buried her face in his shirt and cried.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“Sadie, I know where you’re coming from.”

She shook her head. “How?”

“When Nick was diagnosed with diabetes, we were all scared. He was taken to the hospital and we didn’t know why. We didn’t know what was happening and honestly, we thought the band was over shortly after it had barely started.”

“I didn’t know that’s what happened.” Sadie said. She sat up and looked at Kevin. He nodded.

“I know that you’re scared of the uncertainty. But whatever happens, I’m going to be right by your side Sades.” He smiled and put his arm around her. She scooted close to him and rested her head on his shoulder.

“Thanks, Kevin.”

“Anytime, Sadie.”

They stood up and walked downstairs together. She stood with Nick as he put his arms around her while the whole family sat around and talked. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Joe grinned and went to answer it. Obviously, they were, or at least he was expecting someone. Sadie heard him greet somebody. No, it was a group of people at the door. She looked up at Nick.

“Who’s here?” she asked. He smiled.

“Some friends of ours,” he said. “I think you’ll recognize a few of them.”

One person ran through the kitchen doorway, grinning. Sadie broke away from Nick and ran up to her.

“Demi!” she squealed. Demi hugged Sadie tight and smiled.

“Hey, I’ve missed you!” Demi said.

“Where’s my hug?” Chloe said. She was right behind Demi. Sadie ran up to her and hugged her too. When Sadie looked up, she saw a bunch of people coming into the kitchen, including Selena. When she took a second look, Sadie noticed these weren’t just friends. It was a bunch of people from the Disney Channel. Joe introduced her to all of them. Mitchel Musso, Jennifer Stone, David Henrie, Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Sterling Knight, and even Tiffany Thornton. They were all there.

Sadie said hi and started talking to all of them. She noticed Mitchel especially. He smiled at her and made good conversation. He made her laugh. They talked about things like music and dancing. Suddenly her phone rang. Sadie excused herself and walked out the back door to the small deck that looked out on the yard. She set in one of the chairs and answered her phone.

“Hello?”

“Hi Sadie! It’s me!”

“Justin?” her stomach flipped. “Hey.”

“Sadie, I heard about Sam. I’m sorry. Is he going to be okay?”

Sadie sighed as her heart sank. She hadn’t thought about Sam in a couple of hours. “Yeah,” she said. “He’s fine. I’m staying with my Jonas-Family in the meantime.”

“And how are you doing?”

“I’m fine. I’ll survive.”

“That’s good.” He said.

There was a short pause of silence.

“I miss you, Sadie.”

“Yeah, I miss you too Justin. How’s the tour?”

“No Sadie. I really miss you. I want you back.”

“What?” Sadie sat up straight. “I thought you were happy with Jasmine? And that the distance wasn’t working.”

“It’s not, but that doesn’t change how I feel. I love you Sadie.”

“Justin, just stop! You can’t make me love you, then leave, then come back and love me again, then break up with me, then call me and tell me you love me… again! I can’t do this anymore!”

“Last time Sadie. I promise! I just, I want you back in my life.”

Sadie looked through the sliding glass doors into the kitchen. She locked eyes with Mitchel, and then turned away again.

“I’m sorry Justin. But I’ve moved on.”

Justin scoffed. “With Lautner?”

“No, not with Taylor. Look Justin, I really miss you. I really want you to be my friend again. But I can’t be in love with you anymore.”

“Sadie, please!”

“Goodbye Justin.”

Sadie hung up the phone and groaned.

“Everything alright?” Selena asked from behind. Sadie jumped but nodded. Selena sat in the chair next to Sadie’s.

“That was Justin,” Sadie said. “He told me he loves me and wants me back.” She sighed. “Why can’t anybody just leave me alone? Why can’t my life be normal?”

Selena laughed. “Sorry, Sadie. I wish I knew. But it looks like you and Mitchel are getting friendly.” She nudged Sadie and winked.

Sadie laughed. “I know. I kind of like him but the last thing I want to do is drag him into my drama.”

Selena looked at Sadie. “Sadie, forget about Taylor and Justin. That’s all in the past. I was just talking to Mitchel and he want to ask you out. Start fresh. No more drama okay? Just let him be the one that makes you happy!”

Sadie looked up at Selena. “It’s not that simple.”

“But it can be!” Selena said and smiled. They walked back into the house together. Sadie sat next to Mitchel in the kitchen and they talked the rest of the night. Even after everybody had gone to bed, they stayed up together until two in the morning. They sat next to each other on the couch and Sadie yawned.

“You must be really tired.” He said. “Joe told me about your brother. Must have been a long day.”

Sadie smiled slightly and nodded. “Yeah kind of.”

“Maybe you should go to bed.” Mitchel said. “Come on, I’ll walk you upstairs.”

“Aw, such a gentleman!” Sadie said. Mitchel laughed. They both got up off of the couch and walked upstairs together quietly talking until they reached Sadie’s room.

“Goodnight, Sadie” he said. Before turning to leave, Mitchel gave her a small kiss on the cheek. He smiled and walked back downstairs to go to bed. Sadie went into her room and closed the door, beaming. This was her fresh start of something new. And it was beautiful.

******************************************************************

Sadie sat at her desk staring at her computer. There was a blank word document in front of her. The first English assignment in her junior year of high school was to write about something that happened to her over the summer. Sadie knew that everyone was dying to know what happened when she was on tour with the Jonas Brothers. Ever since everybody found out her secret last year, nothing had been the same.

Some kids at school wanted to be her best friend now that she was related to the Jonas Brothers. Other kids wouldn’t want to talk to her again. There was even a handful that made fun of her consistently. Nothing was easy anymore. But thinking back on her summer and her new family, she didn’t mind.

Back in April, when Sadie found out her biological family was the Jonas family and her real brothers were the Jonas Brothers, she didn’t know what to think about it. Would this be good? Would this be awful? She was invited to spend the summer on tour with them to get to know them and it was quite the eventful summer. Some days were better than others, but overall she was sad to leave. In fact, sad was an understatement. When Sadie got home from the tour, she was too tired to care. But when she woke up the next morning without Kevin and Danielle smiling at her, or Nick asking her how she felt today, or Joe playfully making fun of her, she felt out of place. Sadie cried for a week solid.

Sadie stared blankly at the screen. Did she really want to write an essay about how she dated Justin Bieber? Fell in love with him and Taylor Lautner? How she often had severe anxiety attacks, and once tried to runaway? Sadie started to write her paper. She wrote about the time she went on the London Eye with Taylor, but she left out the part about how he had kissed her and wrote about how beautiful it was. She printed it and went to bed.

“Are you okay,” Audrey, Sadie’s best friend, asked at lunch the next day. “You seem a little upset.”

Sadie shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess I’m fine.”

“Have you talked to your family lately?”

Sadie sighed and looked at Audrey. “When I came home, I talked to them every single day on the phone. Then it turned to texting all day. Then it was just a few texts a day. And now we only talk once or twice a week. It’s like they’re forgetting about me.”

“Don’t be silly! Maybe they’re just super busy!”

“I guess you’re right,” she smiled. “Thanks.”

“And what about Justin or Taylor?”

Sadie shook her head. “I haven’t spoken to Taylor since the London Eye incident. Justin met somebody else on his tour. He called me and said he was sorry but the distance wasn’t working. He still wants to be friends but we haven’t talked since.”

“Wow, Sades. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s fine. There was less drama this way and I had a lot more fun.” Sadie picked at her stale macaroni from the cafeteria. “We should get to class.” They both cleared their trays and left.

One week went by and Sadie hadn’t talk to anybody from the tour. Not her family, or even Demi. Selena and Chloe never contacted her either. Sadie walked into school with Audrey, trying not to think about it when she saw a group of girls huddled in a circle, giggling. When they saw Sadie, they rushed over.

“Sadie! OMG! Your brothers are in town?”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Can you get us tickets?”
“Can we meet them?”

Sadie gave them a look. “What are you guys talking about? They’re not doing a show around here. The tour ended a few days ago. They’re not even in town.”

The girls didn’t buy it.

“Yeah, right!”
“They flew in to the city today!”
“Maybe they came to see you!”

Sadie shook her head. “Sorry, girls. No JoBros today.” She gave Audrey a look and they walked away together. “They came to Chicago, and didn’t call me?”

“I’m sure there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation!”

Sadie shrugged. “Maybe I should just accept the fact that they don’t care anymore.” She thought to herself. Sadie went through the rest of the day like there was nothing wrong. As though she had forgotten about them just as much.

“Sadie, you’re quiet today.” Her mom said in the car on the way home from school.

“It was a long day, that’s all.”

“Okay, well I have a meeting tonight and Dad’s traveling.” Her mom said smiling. “Do you think you’ll be ok for dinner tonight?”

Sadie sighed, “Yeah, I’ll manage.” She looked at her mom. “You seem happy.”

She smiled at Sadie and kept driving without a word.

Not long after they got home, Sadie’s mom had to leave. All alone, Sadie turned on the radio, playing it throughout the house.

“Now playing is the newest single from the Jonas Brothers from their JONAS L.A. soundtrack, it’s called Feelin’ Alive!”

Sadie groaned when it started to play, but didn’t change the station. She felt lonely, not angry. She still missed them and loved them, even if they didn’t return her texts very often. She sat at the kitchen table trying to focus on her Pre-Calc homework and not get upset over the song when the doorbell rang. She closed her book and turned off the stereo to go answer the door.

“Hi! My name is Joe and I just moved in a few blocks away and I was wondering if you would like to have dinner with me and my family?”

Sadie grinned and attacked Joe with a hug, throwing her arms around his neck. He picked her up and hugged her back.

“I have missed you so much Jerk-face!”

Joe chuckled. “I missed you too Scardie-Cat” He gave her one last squeeze and set her down.

“Joe quit hogging her!” Sadie whipped her head around and saw Kevin right behind her, smiling.

“Kevin!” She squeezed his waist and dug her face into his shirt. He gave her a big hug and kissed the top of her head.

“Long time, no see baby sister!” He said. She looked up at him.

“No kidding!”

“So I guess I’m invisible?”

Sadie smiled at Nick and walked up to him giving him her best hug.

“I really missed you.”

“So did I, Sades,” he said without breaking the hug. “I really missed you too. Touring hasn’t been the same without you!”

“He’s right,” Frankie said. “It hasn’t.”

Sadie finally broke her hug with Nick and pulled Frankie in for one. She smiled.

“I think I missed you the most Frankie!”

Not far behind him was Denise, Danielle and Kevin Sr. Sadie excitedly gave them all welcoming hugs before inviting them inside.

“So what are you all doing here?” Sadie asked as they gathered into the kitchen.

“Asking for directions,” Joe said sarcastically. ”What do you think Scardie?”

Sadie sighed. “Oh Jerk-face, you really haven’t changed!” she smiled at him.

“What Joe means to say is,“ Kevin interrupted. “We just missed you and wanted to surprise you!”

“By not ever calling me back?” Sadie looked down.

Danielle put her arms around her. “I knew that was a bad idea.” She squeezed Sadie. “They thought if you were least expecting it, they would surprise you more.” Sadie sighed.

“Danny, I hate surprises!”

Danielle laughed. “I tried to tell them that but your brothers are really stubborn!”

“By the way, Sadie, I had nothing to do with it!” Frankie said and grinned.

“What?” Nick said, clearly shocked. “Frankie, it was your idea!”

“And now you know not to take ideas from a ten year old!” Sadie said. “No offense Frankie.”

Frankie smiled and nodded. Joe groaned impatiently. “Are we going now or what?”

“Going? Sadie asked. “Going where?”

“We’re taking you out to dinner,” Denise said. “Got get ready. We’ll leave in ten minutes.”

Sadie grinned and ran upstairs to her room. She brushed her hair and changed into nice jeans and a t-shirt with a sweater. She walked back down smiling. “Ready!”

They all piled into the car and left. Denise drove all around the town for about twenty minutes.

“Denise, I think you’ve been driving in a circle. Do you want some directions?”

Denise smiled, “No thanks, sweetie, I’m all set.” Sadie felt a warm feeling in her stomach. It was a good feeling. At the beginning of the summer, Sadie would grimace when Denise called her “sweetie”. But lately she missed hearing that.

“Where are we going anyway?” Sadie asked. Nick smiled.

“It’s a surprise!”

“In fact, we’re almost there. Close your eyes, Sadie.” Joe said.

“Why?”

“Just do it. You’ll see!”

Sadie rolled her eyes but closed them when she felt the car stop and heard it turn off.

“Keep them closed,” she heard Joe say. “I’ll help you out of the car.” She felt on of his arms around her and his other hand held hers. He helped her gently climb out of the car. Sadie could feel the pavement under her feet but had no idea where she was. Suddenly she knew they were inside and she heard a door close, Joe still holding onto her.

“Okay, Sadie.” Kevin Sr. said. “Open your eyes!”

Sadie slowly opened her eyes and looked around. They all stood in the large foyer of a house, There was a beautiful staircase to her left and ahead of her she saw a hallway opening up to a kitchen. The room to the left of them was a dining room. Everything was decorated and furnished. The whole family was watching her, waiting for her reaction.

“I don’t understand.” She said quietly. “Where are we?” She looked at Nick. She was confused and nervous all at once.

Nick smiled and walked up to her. “Welcome home, Sades!”

“What?”

“This is where we’re having dinner! We bought a house!” He smiled. Sadie shook her head and took a step backward. Nick frowned. “Sades? What’s the matter?” She didn’t respond, she only took another step back. “Sadie, we though you’d be happy!”

Sadie shook her head. “Why did you do this?”

“We thought you would want this.” Kevin said.

“No! This is everything I didn’t want!”

“What do you mean? Sadie what’s wrong?” Kevin asked.

“Alright, everybody go into the kitchen. I’ll talk to Sadie.” Denise said. Everyone filed into the kitchen as Denise led Sadie to the stairs. They sat down next to each other.

“I’m sorry,” Sadie said looking down. “It’s a beautiful home but I just can’t live here. And you can’t move here!”

“Why not?” Denise asked calmly as she moved Sadie’s hair behind her ear.

“I told you from the start! I said you couldn’t stop their music or their careers. And if you move here, you do exactly that! I also said I won’t leave my life or family behind. If I move in with you, then I’m doing the two things I said couldn’t ever happen!”

Denise chuckled. “Oh Sadie, is that what you think? Sweetie, no!” She smiled warmly. “We don’t want you to move in here permanently! This is so we can see you so much more often. You can stay here for days, even weeks at a time. Or however long you want. We’ll work something out with your parents. They already know.”

Sadie looked up. “Really? But wait, what about The Jonas Brothers? What will happen to the band?”

“They need a little break after each tour. But the next music video will be shot in the city here. Plus there’s a studio nearby. Their record company rented it for a while. They’re not stopping anything, Sadie. It’s okay.”

“They’re not?” Sadie sighed out of relief. “I feel so stupid!”

“You’re not stupid Sadie!” Joe said. He was listening in the whole time. He walked up to Sadie and Denise. “You just don’t like change. That’s normal.” He smiled at her. She smiled back.

“Thanks Joey.” She stood up and threw her arms around his neck. He hugged her tightly. “I missed you big bro.” She said.

He smiled. “I missed you too little sis.” They pulled away and Denise stood up next to them.

“Well you guys, dinner is ready whenever you want.”

They followed her into the dining room where everybody else had taken their seats. They ate dinner that Denise made and Sadie felt like she was really home. After dinner, they went out the back door. There was a patio with furniture and a pretty yard with a hammock, and lights and even speakers. As is got darker, they stayed outside playing guitar and talking until it got late. Kevin drove her home.

“I’ll pick you up from school tomorrow. You can spend the weekend with us.”

Sadie grinned. “Thank you, Kevin. For moving out here for me.”

“You’re family Sades. We’ll do anything for you.”

“Thanks. Love you Kevin.”

“Love you too Sades.” She reached over and hugged him before going inside. Once she was in, he drove away. Sadie walked into the family room and saw her parents.

“Did you have fun tonight?” Her Dad asked, smiling.

“Does nobody understand that I hate surprises?” Sadie replied. Her parents just shrugged and laughed. Sadie went upstairs to her room and quickly packed her weekend bag for tomorrow and went to bed.

The next day was Friday, and it felt longer than usual for Sadie. She told Audrey all about her night with the Jonas’s.

“I don’t know Audrey. I feel like this is going to be good. I’m so happy right now!”

********************************************************

"What?" Sadie asked when she saw Taylor staring at her. They were at a restaurant in London having dinner together.

"Nothing!" Taylor said and laughed. His teeth seemed to shine when he smiled. "It's just really good to see you."

"It's good to see you too." Sadie said. "How have you been?"

"Good." He said. "Busy though. Kristen and I having been doing a lot of press so it's been pretty crazy!"

"Yeah, I could imagine."

"How about you? How have you been lately?"

Sadie stopped to think. Not good. Not good at all. Lack of sleep, bad dreams, and panic attacks. She's been terrible.

"Fine." she finally said.

"That's good." he paused. Then spoke again. "Have you talked to Justin much?"

"A little bit, yeah. We talked the other day."

Taylor just nodded and clenched his jaw.

"And?" he asked.

"And what?" Sadie asked, confused.

"I don't know. I guess I'm asking if you guys are friends?" he emphasized on the word 'friends'.

"Yes," Sadie hesitated. "We're friends."

"Just friends?"

"Why would that matter, Taylor?" Sadie asked, confused.

"It doesn't! I was just wondering. Making small talk." Taylor said looking down at his hands.

"Why do your questions have to involve my relationship with Justin?"

"So you're in a relationship with him? Like more than friends?"

"Taylor! You know what I mean!"

"Sadie, relax!" Taylor insisted. "Is it really that big of a deal that I ask? I know he broke your heart, I was just wondering if you forgave him yet. And obviously, you did." He kept looking down.

"What are you talking about? How did he break my heart? If anyone's to blame, it's me."

"Think about it. You guys started dating, then he left."

"He had to go. He had a tour!" Sadie backfired.

"Alright, whatever."

"Do you hear yourself?" Sadie asked, getting angry. "If anybody broke somebody's heart, I broke yours and his at the same time you broke mine. I mean, Justin forgave me and started talking to me again. This is the first I've heard from you in a really long time!"

Taylor finally looked at Sadie and sighed. "You're right. I'm sorry."

"Thank you." They sat in silence for a while.

When they finished eating, they walked around outside. Sadie stopped on a bridge and looked out over the edge. Taylor stood closely next to her.

"Isn't it beautiful?" she said.

"What?" Taylor asked.

"The water, this view, this city."

"It's a river, Sadie." Taylor laughed. Sadie smiled.

"I mean, everything about London. No, everything about Europe just seems so much more beautiful than the US at times. Don't you think?"

"I guess."

"Maybe it's because nothing is the same here as it is at home. At home everything feels like it's going so fast. Cars, people, and even time moves too quickly. But here, life seems to slow down. It's different here."

"Different?" Taylor asked.

"It's different in a good way. In a beautiful way. The buildings and even the people all seem," Sadie paused and sighed. "Beautiful."

"You're such a poet." Taylor said. "I'm surprised you don't write songs." Sadie shrugged. "Why don't you? You'd have a lot to say."

"I don't know. It's just not what I want to do now."

"What do you want to do now?"

"I just want to be a kid." Sadie said. "I want to be part of the Jonas family. I want to go to school. I want to see the world. I don't want a career right now."

"Maybe when I'm done with the Twilight Saga, we can see the world together." Sadie looked at Taylor.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"I want to travel too," he said. "Maybe it would be fun if we travel together." he smiled. Sadie looked into his brown eyes that seemed to sparkle.

"Yeah," Sadie managed to say. "Maybe."

Taylor grabbed Sadie's wrist. "Come on," he said.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"You'll see." Taylor said and pulled Sadie with him with a smile on his face. Taylor dragged Sadie for a good five or six blocks away.

"Whoa!" Sadie said when Taylor finally stopped and she looked up. Before her was the biggest ferris wheel she had ever seen.

"It's the London Eye. You step inside and it takes you so high you can see over the whole city."

"That's amazing!" Sadie said.

"Do you want to go in?" he asked. Sadie nodded, still looking at the giant wheel. When it was their turn, they were the only two inside the space.

"It's like a room!" Sadie said, looking around the little cabin space. Taylor laughed.

"Well it's supposed to fit twenty-five people."

"I'm impressed," Sadie looked at Taylor. He smiled, clearly proud of himself.

"Oh really?" he asked.

"You've done your research." Sadie said. "Good job!"

"Thanks," he said. "You know, I'm happy it's just us in here."

"Are you now?"

"Yeah. Nobody asking for pictures, or autographs, or anything."

"I guess so." They watched outside as they slowly made their way to the top. "Taylor, I can't believe this!" Sadie gazed out over the city of London. Taylor stepped closer to her.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" he said not looking outside, but at her.

"I think beautiful is an understatement. Gosh, this city is incredible." Sadie said. Taylor put his hand on her back and stood even closer.

"No," Sadie said. "Beautiful just isn't the right way to describe it. It's," Sadie had to pause and think to come up with the right words. Taylor moved his hand to her hair. A piece fell in her face and he moved it behind her ear. "It's," when the perfect word came to her, she looked up at Taylor. Before she could say anything, their eyes locked and they kissed. Sadie pulled away and opened her eyes and looked at Taylor. "Breathtaking." she said. He leaned in again and kissed her.

Sadie didn't think at first. She couldn't. But then it hit her. "Sadie, what are you doing?!" she thought, and immediately pulled away from Taylor.

"Sadie," he started.

"No, Taylor!" Sadie cut him off. "You shouldn't have. I shouldn't have. We can't. Just no!" She stormed away from him.

"Sadie, I'm sorry! I couldn't help it!"

"You said just as friends!" she yelled.

"I know."

"I told you I was working it out with Justin!"

"I know!" he said. "I'm sorry!"

They was getting closer to the ground.

"Taylor how could you?"

"I don't know. I just got carried away."

"With what? How?"

"It was spur of the moment, Sadie! It was us alone in here, it was the view."

"So?"

"It was also you, Sadie!" Taylor yelled.

"Me?" Sadie said, offended.

"Yes you! You know I liked you! You're brown eyes, you're beautiful smile, you're contagious laugh!"

"Enough!"

"Hey," Taylor rebutted. "It's not like you were saying 'no' to me either!"

"I stopped it, though! Much sooner than you would have thought to! And you took me by surprise!"

"You know what? Fine! You're right! I kissed you! And honestly, I'm not sorry." Taylor said.

"What?"

"I don't think you should be with Justin, okay? There, I said it."

Sadie lowered her voice to almost a whisper. "Why?"

"Because I just don't see it." Taylor confessed.

"You don't see it?"

"No, I don't. He doesn't care about you the way I do. Can't you see? It's not meaningful for him! I just don't think he deserves you!"

"Oh wow, Taylor, thanks!" Sadie said sarcastically. "Anything else?"

"Yeah," he said. "One more thing."

They finally reached the ground, and the doors opened.

"I love you, Sadie." Taylor said. Sadie turned and ran out. Taylor ran after her. "Sadie, wait!" She kept running through the thick crowds. Taylor tried to keep up with her, but before he knew it, he lost her. Sadie kept walking swiftly through the streets of London, getting lost deeper inside the city.

Taylor's phone rang.

"Sadie?!" he answered quickly without looking at the caller ID.

"No," the voice on the other line said. "It's Demi. Wait, Taylor, I thought Sadie was with you! I called you because she wouldn't answer her phone."

"Um," Taylor started.

"Taylor, what's going on? Where's Sadie?" Demi asked.

"I don't know where she is."

"What?!" Demi screamed. "How do you NOT KNOW where she is?"

"Well," Taylor said. "Things were said and she kind of, well, she ran off. I tried to follow her but I couldn't! The crowd was too thick! But I'm sure she'll be fine. She's probably on her way back to the hotel or the arena now."

"Don't be so sure," Demi said lowering her voice now.

"Why not?"

"She didn't tell you?"

"Tell me what?" Taylor asked, starting to get nervous.

Demi sighed. "I don't know why but she's been having these episodes where something will severely bother her for one reason or another and she'll run. I can't believe she didn't say anything!"

"Demi hang on," Taylor said. "I'm getting another call. It might be Sadie." Taylor answered the incoming call.

"Taylor, it's Sadie." she said.

"Sadie! Where are you?"

"Do a favor for me," she said. "Don't tell anybody what happened, okay?"

"Okay, fine." he said. "I won't! But where are you? And why didn't you tell me?"

"Bye, Taylor." Sadie said. She ended the call. Taylor returned to Demi's call.

"Well?" she said.

"It was her. But she didn't say anything."

"Ugh!" Demi groaned. "Wait! I see her! She's walking into the hotel now! You better thank your lucky stars, Taylor. If I had told the Jonas', they would have, correction, Joe would have hurt you!"

"Demi, no, let me explain." Taylor started.

"Not now!" Demi said before abruptly hanging up the phone.

Sadie walked into the lobby of the hotel slowly and made her way towards Demi who was waiting by the elevators.

"Sadie, I just got off the phone with Taylor. What happened?"

Sadie looked up at Demi for a split second, then burst into tears. Demi put her arms around Sadie and embraced her in a hug. Sadie hugged Demi back, still crying.

"It's okay," Demi soothed. "It's okay, Sadie."

The bell of one of the elevators dinged and the doors opened but neither Demi, nor Sadie noticed. Kevin, Joe, and Nick stood in the doorway of the elevator, looking at the girls hugging, while Sadie was sobbing.

Joe leaned towards Nick and Kevin. "Do you think they saw us yet?" he asked.

"Nope." Nick said.

"We should make sure Sadie's okay," Kevin said.

"Of course," Nick said.

"Or," Joe said. "We could shut the doors and go back upstairs pretending we never saw anything and avoid all of this girl-drama!"

"Yeah, I like that much better!" Kevin quickly said.

"Me too!" Nick agreed.

Kevin pressed the button and the elevator doors slid shut.
